RR Cut Keene - Mixed Ice Climbing

Another fantastic day of ice climbing with the AMC-NH Mountaineering group! Today we did some mixed climbing at The Cut in Keene, NH. Mild temps, running water, mud and some chocolate help make for a fun day on the ice. So happy to get onto some ice! I've been really busy traveling so this is only my 2nd time ice climbing this season.

Was stoked to get some ice climbing practice in today - 8 climbs, 3 of which were mixed.

The last mixed climb had a crack that I was able to cram my left arm and shoulder into. Muddy but fun!

RR Cut Keene - Ice Climbing

RR, cut, keene, ice climbing

Usually, I would have been out on the ice climbing by this time of the season. But this winter season I've been busy traveling and yesterday finally got out onto some ice. It felt good! I joined the AMC-NH Mountaineering group today for some top rope climbing. It also felt good to get back to "The Cut" and reconnect with old friends as well as make new ones. Ice conditions were perfect! Enjoy some photos of our day.

Got to work on my climbing technique and also do some mock leading. Joined Tom Sintros and Ben Greene of the AMC-NH Mountaineering group to do some laps on lots of vertical ice at The RR Cut in Keene, NH! At one point there were two dozen climbers and a dozen ropes set up for 5 hours of climbing. Great to see many old climbing buddies, also met many new folks! Just a few photos taken by Cristina and I - I managed to get in 12 laps so not many photos taken. Thanks Jason (aka Mtn Man) and Dave for the belays! And Mahalo nui loa to Tom and Ben for the great day! :)

Railroad Cut, NH – Ice Climbing

Railroad Cut – Ice Climbing
SW4-Cheshire North Rail Trail
Keene, NH
AMC-NH Mountaineering Group

I got a chance to try out my new ice climbing gear and am extremely happy. Having the right gear made all the difference. I was able to focus on my technique and thus, got in a lot of climbing today!

This was my second visit to the Railroad Cut and like the year before, I was amazed at the amount of ice in just this one spot! Railroad Cut is just that...a cut in the hill for a railroad passage. It’s part of the Cheshire Rail Trail located just off of Route 12 in Keene, NH. There are several railroad cuts throughout New Hampshire, but this particular cut has consistent ice. The day was overcast and even though a snow storm made a mess of my commute home, it was a great day for ice climbing! What better way for me to start my ice climbing season!
